I first heard Turisas on a Metal Hammer sampler album from 2007.  This song is a sort of Russian / Folk Melodic Metal, I really liked it and it led me to find Folk and Viking Metal that I hadn't really checked out at the time.  I think one of the bands that nudged me into the "genre".  I did listen to some "Pirate Metal", but thats for next time!

The Kovenant

The Kovenant is a Norwegian band formed in 1992 which has evolved from Symphonic Black Metal to Industrial/Electronic metal on more recent albums, shaping the style that they coined after the release of Nexus Polaris: "Progressive Space Metal". They remind me of a the band Orgy a little bit of Rammstein and mix in some Powerman 5000 (Tonight The Stars Revolt & Anyone for Doomsday? era). Overwhelmed with nostalgia right now.

Fragile Nova

Fragile Nova is a Melodic Death Metal band from Moscow, Russia. They have one LP released in 2008, with a similarity to Silent Descent with synth and Trance-like layers.  I can't wait for a sophomore release, one of the upcoming bands to watch.

Rossomahaar

Symphonic Black Metal from Russia. Rossomahaar is sprawling, dark and epic, reminds me of playing Doom when I was younger (oh who am I kidding, I still play it).  They formed in 1995, when "Lazar (guitars) and Vlad (drums, vocals) started off working on few compositions which could be reckoned to the genre of Black Metal stylistically.  Both musicians simultaneously played in Moscow’s dark metal act Stonehenge, which was considered top-priority then, and therefore Rossomahaar’s rehearsals took place quite rarely, to say the least."

They have a large amount of genres mixed together, from Thrash, Black Metal, Death Metal and even... Jazz?

Septic Flesh

Yet another band from Greece!  Slight coincidence, but Rotting Christ reminds me of Septic Flesh, so I thought I should share it!  "Hailing from Athens, Attica, Greece, Septic Flesh was founded in 1990. Their sound was a Hellenic brand of Death Metal mixed with Doom Metal and Gothic Metal elements."  They also share the Season of Mist label with Rotting Christ, and Kylesa (with many others, a great label).

Atmospheric, symphonic and rifftastic with clean vocals that mix amazingly with the Death growls... with a lyrical focus on fantasy, mythology, occultism and H.P. Lovecraft it makes for a pretty epic time.  It almost sounds like a horror film soundtrack that was fused with a metal-heads CD collection.

Stahlhammer

Stahlhammer (German for "Steel Hammer") is a Neue Deutsche Härte (new German hardness, like Rammstein) band from Austria that formed in 1992. They incorporate elements from Hardcore, Industrial Metal and Symphonic Metal into their songs. The band has to this date produced six albums, where the majority of songs are in German.

There are two albums, Wiener Blut and Feind Hört Mit with vocalist Georgij Alexandrowitsch Makazaria which are great. I picked up Feind Hört Mit at a record store about 10 years ago and its one of my favorite albums in my collection. I don't care for Gary Wheeler, vocalist on the other albums... but you should try for yourself!
